PALAVRA-CHAVE: Student engagement and student development

RESUMO

QUAL PROBLEMA FOI ABORDADO?
Within the educational scenario, there were several ways of student engagement. These include academic centers, athletic associations, and community outreach activities. However, the engagement of the student community with the curriculum and organization of the medical school is necessary, but historically it was deficient. Faced with an interest in understanding the educational process they were experiencing and inspired to pursue a teaching career, some college students became involved in educational engagement iniciatives that included training in medical education.

O QUE FOI TENTADO?
The initiative for student development in medical education, called Educadores do Amanhã UNICAMP, was co-constructed by undergraduate students, a resident physician and professors at the institution, with activities conducted primarily by the students themselves, first inspired by their contact with the topic, in participation in an educational development workshop for medical students developed by Faimer-Jr, an initiative of Faimer-Brazil.1 Themes of activities included: teacher's roles, student engagement, student assessment, curriculum construction and assessment, competency-based teaching, teaching methodologies, learning process and self-regulation theory. In 2019, "Educadores" was developed with face-to-face workshops, as an extension activity. In 2020, with the pandemic, a remote adapted program was carried out. In 2021, the initiative became a curriculum activity, with the creation of an elective discipline "AM-103: Student development in health education", increasing the scope for students from other health courses, still remotely. In 2022, the discipline was taught in person. In both models, active learning strategies were used, including flipped classroom, problem-based learning and team-based learning. Satisfaction with the program was assessed after each session with anonymous online questionnaires sent by students, so that they could assess their own perception of learning.

QUE LIÇÕES FORAM APRENDIDAS?
The program allowed students to live the educator experience and also acquire more theoretical content to reflect on their own educational process. After 4 years of the development of the Educadores do Amanhã UNICAMP initiative, it is possible to recognize a community of student practices engaged in the educational process experienced, composed of students and former students, which is growing and is in continuous development, including the search for postgraduate degrees in the same area. Practicing qualified and early student engagement and improving their different roles as educators, students could enhance the evolution of the curriculum, the medical teaching and the future teachers in our country.
