Molecular Genetics Laboratory

The Molecular Genetics Laboratory was created in 1986 by Prof Solange Farah with funding from FAPESP, under the name of "DNA Laboratory". In subsequent years, the laboratory grew quickly , hosting Prof. Christine Hackel and Prof. Carmen Bertuzzo. In 1997, with the arrival of Prof. Iscia Lopes-Cendes, the name of the lab was changed. In recent years, the laboratory has been part of important multicentric projects, including the Human Cancer Genome Project, the Structural Genome Project and the CINAPCE Project, all of them supported by FAPESP. More recently, the laboratory
has joined the recently created Brazilian Institute of Neuroscience and Neurotecnology (BRAINN), which is part of a special program also supported
by FAPESP.

The laboratory is dedicated to developing projects in genetics and molecular biology applied to neurosciences and other genetic diseases. Under BRAINN, the projects have as main objective the investigation of the mechanisms of many neurological diseases through molecular studies combined with high-throughput technologies, like microarrays and genome sequencing, and advanced data modeling strategies to obtain a better understanding of biological processes involved with the phenotypes of
interest. It is also of great interest to the lab studies integrated to the clinic, where detailed phenotypic analyses, including neuroimaging studies, are applied together with genetic data.
