Graduate course in Collective Health

The Graduate Program in Public Health at Unicamp aims to train quality researchers at the level of Master and Doctor. Collective Health is a scientific field that contributes to the study of the process of health-disease-care as a social process in various groups and populations, concerned with geographical, historical and social distribution, and with the ways in which each society sets its demands on health and is organized to meet their needs in this field.

Being an interdisciplinary field par excellence, Collective Health has developed from the structuring of three main disciplinary areas: epidemiology, social sciences and health planning and management. Reflecting this interdisciplinary tradition, our program is multidisciplinary and uses qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches.

Our current major areas are: Epidemiology; Policy, Planning and Management; and Social Sciences in Health reflect the specificity of disciplinary axes and provide in-depth and specialized study without losing the thematic connection area. To ensure the cohesion of the field as a whole there are basic core subjects common to all areas of concentration, seeking to ensure basic competence in public health as a whole.

The program has been characterized by great exchange with health services, agencies and national and international universities. It has attracted researchers of national and Latin American universities as well as the Brazilian Unified Health System and its complementary areas. As a result, its performance has been marked by productive partnerships with other institutions of the internal academic environment at Unicamp, Universities and Research Institutes of Brazilian state and federal universities as well as abroad.

Its target audience is top-level professionals working with the Health Sciences interface on Public Health, and its duration is 12 to 24 months for the Master's degree and 24-48 months for the Doctorate degree. The major demand of recent years is systematically assessed through a selection process and the criteria for obtaining scholarships are meritocratic, stimulating the engagement and full dedication of our students.

We are proud to see this reflected in our graduates: we have awarded 20% of doctorate degrees in public health during a five-year period (2004-2008) and many of these former students now play highly important roles in the Brazilian Unified Health System, Public Universities and abroad contributing to the development of science in the country and the region.
