Ophthalmology resident from SMS Unicamp performed observership at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, US

Breno Di Gregorio, a third year Ophthalmology resident of School of Medical Sciences (SMS Unicamp) completed a 3-week observership at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in February 2024. The institute, part of the Miami University Health System, has been ranked the best in ophthalmology in the United States for the past 20 years by U.S. News & World Report.

According to Di Gregorio, it was a privilege following some of the most renowned ophthalmologists in the world and engaging with cutting-edge technologies and treatment methods. The observership provided a unique opportunity to witness a wide range of procedures, from routine examinations to complex surgeries across various ophthalmological areas such as Glaucoma, Neuro-ophthalmology, Retina, Cornea and Cataract surgery.

“A significant highlight was observing the integration of pioneering research into patient care. The institute’s dedication to research and innovation was evident in every aspect of its operations, from diagnostics to treatment strategies. This exposure to the forefront of ophthalmological advancements underscored the importance of research and continuous learning in the field”, said Di Gregorio.

“I am grateful for the invaluable experience gained at Bascom Palmer. It has enriched my understanding of ophthalmology and reignited my passion for advancing eye care. As I continue the residency, I am inspired to apply the lessons learned from this amazing observership to enhance in my future practice”, reflected Di Gregorio.
