Professor Karim Boumédiene, from the University of Caen Normandy, Féderation Hospitalo Universitaire Surface, France, presented lecture about cartilage engineering in the context of head and neck surgery at School of Mechanical Engineering of University of Campinas (Unicamp), on September, 27th, 2019. Prof. Boumédiene is Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at University of Caen Normandy (UNICAEN, France), and Head of Laboratory Bioconnect EA 7451. In his lab (Bioconnect), he Is interested in cartilage physiopathology and its repair by tissue engineering. While cartilage seems to be a simple tissue, due to its lack of vascularization and innervation, it remains complex to construct ex-vivo. During his lecture he reviewed several attempts of cartilage engineering including different cell types and scaffolds while focusing on the field of head & neck surgery, especially auricular cartilage. He showed the latest results, including various biomaterials, like decellularized cartilage and vegetal scaffolds.

Prof. Boumédiene was received at Unicamp by Prof. Angela Luzo, from Molecular Biology Laboratory, Hematology Hemotherapy Centre, School of Medical Science (SMS).
