SMS - Unicamp Cystic Fibrosis Study Group receives two international professors for thesis and Workshop

The Cystic Fibrosis Study Group from the Center for Investigation in Pediatrics (CIPED) of School of Medical Sciences (SMS), University of Campinas (Unicamp), will receive this month two renowned experts in the field: Prof. Paul Quinton, from University of California San Diego, USA, and Prof. Niels Høiby, from University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Prof. Quinton has co-authored the PhD study about “Safety, Tolerability and the effects on clinical variables and laboratory markers of Sodium Bicarbonate inhalation in Cystic Fibrosis Patients” with Prof. Jose Dirceu Ribeiro, MD, PhD., Full Professor of Pediatrics, and Coordinator of the Pediatric Pulmonology Area at SMS - Unicamp. The PhD thesis will be presented on August 22nd, 2018, at 9:00 AM, by the candidate Msc. Carla Cristina S. Gomez, PhD Student of Post Graduate Program in Child and Adolescent Health.

Prof. Høiby has co-authored the PhD study about “Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in the airways of cystic fibrosis: early detection and functionality of the specific humoral immune response” with Dr. Carlos Emilio Levy, from Laboratory of Microbiology, Division of Clinical Pathology, Hospital de Clínicas (HC - Unicamp). The PhD thesis will be presented on August 24th, 2018, at 9:00 AM, by the candidate Renan Marrichi Mauch, on the Post Graduate Program in Child and Adolescent Health. The thesis will be presented in English and Prof. Paul Quinton, from University of California San Diego, USA, will participate as bank member.

On Saturday, August 25th, from 8:50 AM to 5:00 PM, both professors will participate as especially invited speakers at “4th International Workshop on Cystic Fibrosis”, at Auditorium 1, on Legolandia, SMS - Unicamp. (Program).

Prof. Niels Høiby, MD, DMSc, is Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen and at Department of Clinical Microbiology at Rigshospitalet in Denmark. Prof. Høiby was the first president of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society and was the founder and Chairman of multiple societies, including the Scandinavian Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the ESCMID study group of Biofilms and the Biofilm Study Group of the Danish Society for Clinical Microbiology. He has published extensively in the area of chronic lung infection in CF and other biofilm infections. Prof. Høiby has won multiple awards and honors throughout his career.

Prof. Paul M. Quinton, Ph.D., is the Nancy Olmsted Chair in Pediatric Pulmonology and Professor of Pediatrics, at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and Professor of Biomedical Sciences, UC Riverside. Dr. Quinton, who has CF himself, discovered that the basic defect in the CF sweat duct was due to anion impermeability and not defective anion exchange. His discovery is considered to be one of the major advances in understanding the basic CF defect.
